Socha Hai - thinking without curbs

Back to Rock On! The movie and its songs carried the message of free thinking. The whole dichotomy that the musicians face while choosing an unconventional career as rock musicians is because thinking beyond the beaten track raises many eye brows. They believe in doing things which are not done by any Tom, Dick and Harry. This idea is captured in the very opening scene, where they choose a song, which asks questions, which border around the absurd. But they prove their point. Did anyone ever wonder why the sky is blue, why the earth is round, why water is damp.... and why we fight?

[D] [G]
aasma hai neela kyun, paani geela geela kyon?
[Bm] [A]
gol kyon hai, zameen?

[D] [G]
silk mein hai narmi kyon?, aag mein garmi kyon?
[Bm] [A]
do aur do paanch , kyun nahin?

[D] [G]
ped ho gaye kam kyon?, teen hai ye mausam kyon?

[Bm] [A]
chaand do kyon nahin?
[D] [G]
duniya mein hai jung kyon?, behta laal rang kyon?

[Bm] [A]
sarhadein hai kyon, har kahin?
[D] [G]
socha hai… ye tumne , kya kabhi?
[D] [G]
socha hai… ki hai ye , kya sabhi?
[D] [A] [D]

socha hai… socha , nahin toh socho abhi

[D] [C]

sannata sunai nahi deta
[D] [C]
aur hawayen dikhayi nahi deti
[D] [Em] [C] [D]

socha hai kya kabhi
[D] [Em] [D] [Em]

hota hai ye kyun............

[D] [G]

Tum Ho Toh - the emotional finale of Rock On!

Farhan Akhtar has always carried the young and trendy tag with directorial ventures like Dil Chahta hai and Lakshya behind him. Farhan, the actor, became an instant hit with Rock On! But to call Rock On a Farhan Akhtar film would be a misnomer. It was a tribute to the spirit of Rock music, of which Farhan himself is a dilettante. The tale of musicians of a rock band, who after a series of successes succumb to a clash of egos, only to come together years later and carry on with the legacy of MAGIC – the rock band, touched the right chords. Shanker-Ehsaan-Loy’s music became a runaway success. The final song Tum ho Toh was the icing on the cake, bringing out the latent emotions of friendship, love and loneliness. Here are the guitar chords of the song.

C C
Tum ho toh, gaata hai dil

Yeh shaam Mastani - romance, melancholy and music

Aradhana was two years old and Shakti Samanta teamed up yet again with Rajesh Khanna for the 1971 blockbuster Kati Patang. The songs of Aradhana had established Kishore Kumar as the irreplacable voice of Rajesh Khanna. But there was a new team in the making. R.D.Burman made an entry into this Shakti-Rajesh-Kishore team, replacing his father S.D.Burman, whose runaway hits made Aradhana a musical blockbuster and brought Kishore Kumar permanently into limelight.
The song Yeh shaam mastani carries many emotions at the same time – the melancholic, the romantic, the energetic, besides being very poetic. Each and every part of the song became a permanent part of a music lover's memory - be it the prelude, the interludes, the yoodles or whistles. As a high-spirited Rajesh Khanna seranades a not-so-high-spirited Asha Parekh, many hearts swooned over and over again. Even today, sitting in a calm, cool breezy evening evokes only one line in our minds – Yeh shaam mastani.....

Allah Ke Bande - the Kailash magic

In one of his interviews, Kailash Kher had once said “When I was a child, these travelling saints used to come to my house in Meerut, I would sit with them and observe them. I never understood what they talked about but I absorbed what they were saying and their vibrations affected my growth in a very positive way”. Perhaps these positive vibrations took complete manifestation in the song that catapulted Kailash Kher into the higher notches of stardom. The movie Waisa Bhi Hota Hai was a complete dud. But what remained forever since was the song Allah Ke Bande.... Kaliash never had to turn back ever since. A failed businessman and a one-time singer of Dermicool jingles became a sensation. The song, steeped in Sufism evokes mixed feelings of hope and mysticism in us. Here are the guitar tabs for the song.

Teri Deewani - an amazing work by Kailash Kher

The year was 2006 and Kailash Kher had become a big name by then. His album Kailasa hit the stands and soon its songs became chartbusters. Secret for his heartthrob voice is that while singing he is in trance with the God. Kailasa consists of tracks like 'Teri Dewaani', which is intense and completely immersed in love. Kailash says "Some people don't have faith in God but believe in love and everyone has a different definition of God so I don't want to define my songs but you will be able to understand what I wanted to communicate with the emotions with which I have sung. Kailasa means Heaven and is also the name of Kailash's band. Kailash Kher says about his album "meri album prem ki neeti sikhati hai ("My album will make you feel the essence of love"). I love my title track 'Teri Deewani' which I have composed with heart and soul." The immense popularity of this song and its popularity with guitarists and music lovers has led me to bring out a post on its guitar tabs. So here it is:

Some basic facts

1) There are 7 main notes which are denoted as C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.
2) In between these notes are a few sharp notes which are denoted by # (sharp symbol).
3) So the complete series becomes C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F# G, G#, A, A#, B, C
4) You might be wondering why there is no E# and B# present. This is because these notes do not exist.
5) The difference between two notes is represented by a semitone for example the difference between C and C# is a semitone, similarly the difference between C# and D is represented by a semitone.
6) The difference between two alternate notes is represented by a tone. For example the difference between C and D is called a tone, similarly the difference between C# and D# is also a tone.
This is the guitar fret-board showing all the notes including sharps.

1) We already know that the set of notes are C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F# G, G#, A, A#, B, C.
2) The note C#(c sharp) can also be represented by Bb (B flat).Similarly D# can be written as Eb (E flat) and G# can be written as Ab (A flat). The chart below explains it.

This is the guitar fretboard showing all the notes including flats.

Note that the first note on the 1st string is E. From the series of notes we know that the pattern coming after E would be F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C and so on which is also clear from the notes on the string of 1st string.

Similarly first note on the 2nd string is B, hence C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F# G, G#, A, A# and so on which is also clear from the notes on the string of 2nd string.

The first note on the 3rd string is G, hence G#, A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F# and so on which is also clear from the notes on the string of 3rd string.

Likewise, the first note on the 4th string is D, hence D#, E, F, F# G, G#, A, A#, B, C, C# and so on which is also clear from the notes on the string of 4th string.

And the first note on the 5th string is A, hence A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F# and so on which is also clear from the notes on the string of 5th string.

Similarly first note on the 6th string is E, hence F, F# G, G#, A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E and so on which is also clear from the notes on the string of 6th string.

The Strings Unfold with the sound of music

The journey of this blog Indianguitar-chords.blogspot.com began a few days back as I lay reclining in my room, on a lousy Sunday afternoon, in search of Indian guitar tabs on Google. Sites after sites and forums after forums came my way – none to my satisfaction. I knew that as far as the Western tabs are concerned, one can find pretty decent sites on the net. But when it comes to Indian guitar tabs, a lot is left to be desired. As I browsed through different forums, I sensed that most of them offered incorrect chords and notations.

Coming to Indian guitars, I personally feel that a lot needs to be done in this field today, though things are changing and changing for the right reasons. The face of Indian guitars has changed slowly but surely in the past 20 years or so. The rise of bands like Euphoria and Silk Route have awakened a new horizon in the hearts of music aficionados. With the flow of information being porous, the masses are now exposed to different styles of music. The Internet revolution has made World Music available a few clicks away. Pakistani bands such as Jal, Strings, EP and CALL are rocking the charts and have built up a concrete fan base across the border. Similarly Indian performers too are finding a sound fan following abroad.

The sounds from popular Hindi cinema, which is otherwise known as Bollywood, has always reflected the changing tastes of the masses and has often, shaped them in a big way. The likes of Naushad, R.D.Burman and A.R.Rehman have produced tunes which have permeated into the consciousness into the music lovers over the years and have paved new paths in the field of music. Today, movies like Life in a Metro and Rock On have brought out some fine pieces of rock music before the masses.
This blog too is an endeavour to cater to those changing tastes. It is beyond doubt a platform for me as a guitarist to express my ideas on music and open a channel to provide guitar chords to all those who hold a similar interest in this field. In this blog, I’ll try to make things easy for all those guitarists who are seeking the chords and notations for popular songs from movies and albums in India.

Before I close this, it goes without saying that the comments section is for you. Do revert back and make this blog as interactive as possible. In the pathway ahead is a red carpet music, which I’ll traverse with all music lovers who are welcome to the world of
